Aug 23, 2023At 600m, the 308win is drifting 3.5″ laterally for every 1 mph of wind while the 7 mm mag is drifting 2.5″ for every 1 mph wind. That’s an inch extra for every 1mph wind. Keep in mind that at that distance, you are not moving a 1inch group with your hunting rifle but a clay pigeon sized group if you have a well put together setup.

The advantage of the 308 is the compact package (20″ barrel, short action) and mild recoil, but comes at the price of a shorter effective range. The 7mm Rem Mag has the advantage in ballistics/wind drift, but comes at the price of increased recoil, overall A 7mm 168 vld at 3000 fps is deadly further than a typical person is capable. The advantage inside 400 yards over a .308 win is flatter trajectory and less wind drift. The “point blank zero” for the 7 mm is better than the .308 so errors in range and wind estimation are reduced. Mar 28, 2022. #4.
